Profile:Pick 'n Pay is a large supermarket chain store in South Africa, established in 1967. It can also be found in other regions of southern Africa, such as Botswana, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Namibia. The founder of the chain is Jack Goldin. Raymond Ackerman purchased three Pick 'n Pay supermarkets (in Cape Town from Goldin. Ackerman served as executive chairman until his retirement in 2010. His eldest son, Gareth, is the current chairman.Other supermarket store chains in South Africa that are part of the Pick 'n Pay group are Score Supermarkets and Boxer. However, Pick 'n Pay is currently converting Score supermarkets into Pick 'n Pay franchises. This initiative forms the core of Pick 'n Pay's economic empowerment scheme.

Profile:Woolworths Holdings Limited JSE: WHL is a South African chain of retail stores and one of the largest in the country. The first Woolworths store opened in the old Royal Hotel in Cape Town in October 1931. It was founded by Max Sonnenberg assisted by his son Richard and Fred Kossuth, then 22 and an “office boy” and later a leader of the company.Woolworths now incorporates a series of food stores, some of which are attached to retail stores, while others stand alone or are attached to Engen petrol stations in prestigious areas, such as the ones
on Main Road, Bryanston, Rivonia Road, Rivonia or William Nicol, Sandton. Some stores also include a Cafe W restaurant. Woolworths goods are sold at 149 corporate stores, 51 international franchise stores throughout the rest of Africa and the Middle East and 69 South African franchise stores nationwide.The company also operates clothing stores in Australia. Because Woolworths Limited owns the right to the Woolworth name in that country, the stores there are branded as Country Road.The chain was named after the United States chain F. W. Woolworth
Company but, because of the current trademark laws, the name was legally used without permission. No financial connection ever existed between the companies.
